Oscars 2017: Complete List Of Winners

La La Land won Best Picture at the Oscars, then it didn't.

In what has to be the weirdest, most uncomfortable finale in Academy Awards history, presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty ended the 2017 ceremony by announcing that the biggest honor of the night went to the acclaimed musical La La Land. But after the cast and crew were already onstage and mid-speeches, it was revealed to them and everyone inside the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles that the movie did not actually win Best Picture. The drama Moonlight pulled off a stunning upset. The wrong card was handed to Beatty.

La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz caught the mistake when he read the winners card in his hand onstage and interrupted the proceedings to make the correction. At that point, the card was displayed to the camera, clearly indicating that Moonlight had won.

Host Jimmy Kimmel said, "This is very unfortunate what happened," then Beatty attempted to explain what went wrong. He said he opened the envelope and found a card that read "Emma Stone, La La Land." The producers of La La Land graciously handed their awards to those for Moonlight, and Kimmel jokingly promised never to host the Oscars again.

Of course, La La Land didn't go home empty-handed. The movie took home six Oscars out of a record-tying 14 nominations. Damien Chazelle won Best Director, Emma Stone won Best Actress, and the movie swept the musical categories.

Meanwhile, Casey Affleck won Best Actor for his heart-wrenching performance in Manchester by the Sea, Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight, and Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress for Fences.

Suicide Squad is also now an Oscar-winning motion picture thanks to a win in the Best Makeup category, while Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them won for Best Costume Design. The Jungle Book beat out the likes of Doctor Strange and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story for Best Visual Effects.
