Deadliest Catch Star Nick Mavar Dead At 59

According to reports from outlets like Deadline, "Deadliest Catch" star Nick Mavar has passed away at the age of 59. No cause of death has been confirmed as of this writing. The Bristol Bay Police Chief Jeffrey Eldie told the outlet that Navar died in Naknek, Alaska at a local boatyard; after he experienced an unknown medical emergency, medics were called, and Navar was declared dead after being removed to a hospital.

Mavar is best known for appearing on "Deadliest Catch" as well as multiple spin-offs of the popular reality show; he worked as a deckhand on the fishing vessel known as the Northwestern under well-known "Deadliest Catch" fixture Sig Hansen.

This is a developing story.

Nick Mavar was a beloved member of the Deadliest Catch crew

Fans of "Deadliest Catch" know that, during his time on the show, Nick Mavar suffered an extremely serious medical condition that nearly ended his life while on camera. During the show's 17th season, Mavar developed appendicitis and had to be removed from the Northwestern; very luckily, the boat hadn't fully left for its voyage when Mavar began experiencing symptoms of appendicitis, and he was able to exit the ship and seek medical attention (a ruptured appendix, without surgical intervention, can lead to death). Mavar left the show shortly thereafter in 2020, and that same year, he sued the owners of the Northwestern, claiming that, amidst protocols for COVID-19, the boat wasn't adequately prepared to provide medical treatment for its crew in an emergency.

Mavar was also known for his kind heart and generous spirit on "Deadliest Catch;" Mavar's nephew Jake Anderson also appears on the show and experienced struggles with addiction, even enduring homelessness at one point — until Mavar stepped in to help him. In 2021, Anderson posted a tribute to Mavar on Facebook, writing, "I love you uncle Nick Mavar you are the embodiment of fisherman. Thank you for pulling me out of the mire so many years ago."

Nick Mavar will be missed by his friends, family, and "Deadliest Catch" fans across the globe.
