What Happened
To Freddy
Maugatai From
Deadliest Catch?
Veteran deckhand Freddy Maugatai joined “Deadliest Catch” in 2008 and quickly became a fan favorite because of his charisma, and strong, hot-tempered personality. He’s been at the center of a number of controversies, even getting fired from his ship in 2011. Here’s what he’s been up to since then.
Maugatai still appears somewhat regularly on the series, despite being fired from the Wizard by Captain Monte and landing in some legal trouble in 2012 after getting into a fight with a couple in a bar bathroom. He was last seen on the show in 2021’s Season 17, but didn’t return for Season 18.
Still, Maugatai’s legal issues didn’t impact his role on “Deadliest Catch,” which isn’t surprising given the volatile, high-pressure nature of the job. His involvement with the show may have been complicated because of the main Bristol Bay king crab fishery being closed for the 2021-22 season, a situation that has devastated these crews.
