Alec Guinness' Star Wars Deal Made Him Wealthier Than You Think

Sir Alec Guinness played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original “Star Wars” trilogy, and his performance padded his pockets well thanks to the contract he signed in the first movie.

During the negotiation period for "Star Wars," Guinness forced 20th Century Fox to double its original salary offer and tack on an additional 2% of backend grosses.

As if that wasn't enough, Lucas went ahead and tossed in an extra .25% once filming concluded. Thus, Guinness earned a staggering $7 million during its initial run.

By the time of his death in 2000, the film earned him approximately $95 million. However, he wasn’t a fan of the film itself, once calling it "Fairy-tale rubbish" in a letter.

Regardless of his feelings about the franchise, Alec Guinness is a "Star Wars" legend, and his contract resulted in one of the biggest paydays in Hollywood history at the time.
